Who We Are
Hello! I'm Ellen, the maker and owner of Fat Chap Co., which I started in early 2021. We specialize in dry rendered tallow and lard, handmade, natural bath and body products, aiming to provide high-quality, nutrient-dense, and affordable self-care luxuries.
My diverse background spans various trades, including drawing, metalworking, and butchery, where I've spent the last 9 years. Currently, I work as a butcher at The Meating Place in Hillsboro, Oregon, after gaining experience at a hog processing plant in Carlton.
I appreciate the raw beginnings of creation, and rendering and soap making embodies that process for me. Through my work, I've noticed the significant waste from perfectly raised livestock, particularly organ fat and suet, which often goes unused.
At Fat Chap Co., I’ve found a sustainable way to repurpose this fat, nourishing dry skin and reducing waste. We promote whole animal butchery, which is vital for several reasons:
Reducing Waste: Using all parts of the animal minimizes waste.
Maximizing Value: It makes meat more economical and accessible.
Supporting Sustainability: This practice lessens the environmental impact of meat production.
Preserving Tradition: It helps maintain the ancient skills of butchery.
By embracing whole animal butchery, we can make a positive impact on our community and the environment.
